Dr. Nuzhat Ul Qayoom Qazi is an environmental scientist, mountaineer, and founder of the Himalayan Ecosystem Services Trust (HER Trust), with a specialization in Himalayan rivers, forests, and communities. Trained in Forestry (M.Sc.) and Forest Hydrology (Ph.D., FRI Dehradun, 2013; among the first in India), she has led work since 2006 on water scarcity, forest degradation, soil erosion, and climate risks, translating science into nature-based, community-led solutions. She has published in national and international journals and brings expedition experience from 50+ Himalayan field campaigns with strong safety and team leadership.

Her recognitions include the Women Scientist Award (WOS-A, India), IUFRO-SPDC Fellowship (Chile), OKP/NFP (Netherlands), APAFRI (Malaysia), ICIMOD Scholarship (Nepal), S.K. Seth Prize (Indian Forester), VLIR-UOS (Belgium), and SAP Award (South Korea).

Through HER Trust, she advances riparian restoration, watershed governance, gender & IPLC inclusion, open-data monitoring, and green livelihoods for a climate-resilient Himalaya.

Mr. Abdul Qayoom Qazi is an Electrical & Instrumentation Technologist with over four decades of service in the Power Development Department, Jammu & Kashmir. He has overseen the design, installation, and commissioning of powerhouses, grid stations, and cement/power plants, and has mentored more than 500 engineering students through practical, industry-based training. His consulting experience spans Nepal, Malaysia, Iraq, and other countries.

Beyond engineering, Mr. Qazi has devoted 35 years of voluntary service to the Shahi Hamdaan Memorial Trust and its Mission School, where he has held multiple leadership and support roles. Under this banner, the Trust has enabled free education for children from low-income families, orphans, and the destitute, and provides monthly assistance to widows and senior citizens. Over the years, hundreds of boys and girls have studied under the Trust and thousands have completed their education, now contributing meaningfully in society.

At HER Trust, Mr. Qazi plays a role of Director. He applies his blend of large-project execution and community stewardship to our environment and climate programs—strengthening project planning and delivery, safety standards, asset maintenance, transparent procurement, and youth skilling. His practical leadership helps us deliver resilient, people-centred restoration across rivers, forests, and watersheds.

Our goal is to collaboratively provide potential solutions to local communities and to promote activities for the health of Himalayan Ecosystem.
