Himalaya: A Hub for Ecosystem Services
The Himalaya, aptly called Third Pole - hosts the tallest mountains of the planet and regulates the regional climate. With the largest glacierized area outside polar regions, the Himalaya is the birth place of several Asia’s major river systems which provide water for irrigation, hydropower generation, industries, and municipal purposes.
The Himalaya, a biodiversity hotspot, supports numerous fragile ecosystems and provides a rich base for high value agriculture and forests, and mesmerizing landscapes.
Unequivocal global climate change —a result of anthropogenic emissions— is affecting all the Earth’s spheres including the Himalaya that contains the most vulnerable cryosphere ecosystems.
VISION
Fostering Sustainable Development in the Himalayas through Science, Innovation, and Local Action
MISSION
To conserve and restore Himalayan ecosystems by delivering locally tailored, science-based solutions that empower communities and enhance environmental resilience.
Mega Problems to Micro-solutions
At HER, we focus on delivering practical, locally-adapted solutions to communities facing critical environmental challenges. Our work addresses forest degradation, soil erosion, declining soil moisture in agricultural lands, water quality issues, reduced environmental flows, drying springs and aquifers, baseflow depletion in rivers and streams, and waste recycling.
We emphasize micro-scale research, field measurements, and testing as essential tools to understand and enhance hydrologic regulation, climate resilience, soil formation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and recreational potential.
By actively collaborating with local communities and leveraging scientific expertise, we aim to develop effective resource mobilization strategies and implement sustainable approaches that conserve and restore the unique ecosystems of the Himalayas.
